Ford has just announced it is putting Volvo up for sale. The strategic review, announced today, is part of the Blue Oval’s rescue plan and, if it does sell its Swedish outpost, it could add hundreds of millions to Ford’s wonky balance sheet. The news underlines the collapse of Ford’s global ambitions.
Twenty years ago, the classic bargain brands like Lada seemed to be going the same way as the Soviet empire that spawned them. Woefully dated and badly made, only a weirdo would have bought a new Lada rather than a second-hand model from Ford, Vauxhall or VW. However, one of the big trends in the car industry today is the re-emergence of bargain cars.

Volvo claims the all-new XC90 that will be revealed in late August will be one of the safest cars money can buy thanks to pioneering new safety technology. So far the Swedish carmaker has teased us with designer sketches of how the seven-seat crossover will look, told us how it will be offered with a 395bhp plug-in hybrid that emits just 60g/km of CO2 and released official pictures of the production XC90’s interior. Now it’s time for the Volvo publicity machine to tell us about the novel new safety tech that will protect us from ourselves and this includes two claimed world firsts.
